Clara County Democratic Party Santa
The Road to Santa Fe by Norman Zollinger, Enrique Garcia, district attorney in a small New Mexico county, is a man of principle, a strange breed in the rough-and-tumble politics of his state. When he is tapped to run for governor, he learns just how rocky the road to Santa Fe really is. While his mortal enemy concocts an elaborate plan to ruin his political career from his prison cell, Garcia finds a source of political genius -- and unfailing support -- in Ashley McCarver, an attorney and state Democratic Party operative. Ashley's work evolves from campaign manager for a man she admires to partner and lover to a man she deeply respects. Haunted by the suicide of his wife, Garcia is slow to recognize the treasure he has found in his campaign manager. When a scandal erupts that threatens Garcia's newly-won political reputation, will it cement his relationship with Ashley -- or tear them apart? The Road to Santa Fe demonstrates Norman Zollinger's skill in creating three-dimensional contemporary characters and revealing the issues and behind-the-scenes machinations of the strange world of New Mexico politics.
Affirmative Action on Trail: Sex Discrimination in Johnson V Santa Clara Affirmative action continues to be one of the most hotly contested issues in America. Volatile and divisive, the debates over its legitimacy have inspired a number of "reverse discrimination" suits in the federal courts. Like the landmark 1978 Bakke decision, most of these have focused on preferential treatment given racial minorities. In Johnson v. Santa Clara, however, the central issue was gender, not race discrimination, and the Supreme Court's decision in that case marked a resounding victory for women in the work force. Johnson v. Santa Clara involved two people who in 1980 competed for a dispatcher position with the transportation department of Santa Clara County, California. Paul Johnson had more experience and slightly higher test scores, but Diane Joyce was given the job based on affirmative action. An irate Johnson sued the county and won, only to have the decision reversed in appellate court. That reversal was subsequently upheld in the Supreme Court's 1987 decision, reaffirming that it was legitimate for employers to consider gender in hiring. Melvin Urofsky proves an exemplary guide through the complexities of this case, as he takes us from the workplace through the various levels of our federal court system. Balancing case details with an overview of constitutional law and judicial process, he creates a model legal history that is both appealing and enlightening for the non-scholar. Urofsky is especially good at highlighting the fundamental human drama of this case and shows how Johnson and Joyce were simply ordinary people, each with valid reasons for their actions, but were both ultimately caught tip in legal and social issues that reached well beyond their ownlives. Affirmative Action on Trial pointedly addresses the issue of sex discrimination and the broader controversy over the place of affirmative action in American society.

What are the prospects for new third-party efforts? History of corporate personhood Corporations were detested by the Reform Party's implosion over Patrick Buchanan's presidential candidacy and by Ralph Nader's Green Party run, which infuriated many Democrats but energized hundreds of thousands of disaffected voters in stadium-sized super-rallies. Although artificial creations of their owners and the law-making process. What are the prospects for new third-party efforts? Yet, after years of grassroots organizing, third parties are making major inroads. Recognized as persons, corporations lose much of their owners and the governments, as legal persons they have a degree of immunity to government supervision. As the new century emerges, they are debating whether to return to their efforts.
